Casing is the impervious durable pipe placed in a boring to serve as a vertical conduit for water in a well. The casing prevents the walls from caving in. Most wells today use PVC casing. On Cape Cod, older steel-cased wells must be replaced. Pump manufacturers will not honor warranties if placed into steel wells, due to the potential for metal shavings in the water.
